Strategies to Succeed Online
Posted by Salem Global on Sep 21, 2007
What a great article in the New York Times this week:
Strategies to Succeed Online Â
PUTTING a small business online used to be a relatively simple matter: buy the domain names that matched your company’s identity, set up a Web server and send out a press release and a few e-mail messages. No more.
These days, a Web site may not even be the best place to start promoting your products or services. Instead, you can consider setting up a blog, participating in social-networking communities like Facebook and creating a storefront in virtual worlds like Second Life to get the buzz going.

Yahoo Is Changing

Yahoo Rolls Out New Search FeaturesÂ

Yahoo has made a number of enhancements to their core search engine. The first major change is that a search now shows related terms that you might want to try. For example, searching for New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will ask you if you want to “also try†a search for “gisele bundchen tom brady†(Brady’s Victoria’s Secret model girlfriend).
The second major enhancement is that Yahoo’s “search assistant†now pops under the search box while you are typing and offers suggested search terms and more topics you might want to explore. The search assistant will only show up when you ask for it, or if Yahoo senses you are struggling to pick query terms. According to Yahoo, Search Assist leads to a 61% increase in successful task completion.
A final piece of the new Yahoo search is that the results will now include multimedia when it’s available. In my example search for Tom Brady, you get his picture, stats, and a link to his profile on Yahoo Sports. Additionally, Yahoo will pull in results from sites like YouTube, Yahoo Video, and Flickr where available.
Overall, the new features are a nice enhancement for Yahoo that might make existing users less likely to switch to a competitor. However, stealing market share from Google will depend on improving their core search algorithm to yield better results, and that remains to-be-determined.
It should be noted that MSN Live Search recently rolled out similar changes to their results, and Google is experimenting with showing “related searches†and multimedia in their results as well.

Optimizing Tips for Search Engines
Posted by Salem Global on Sep 13, 2007
SalemGlobal Internet Website Marketing wants to educate customers. Next to contextual search (i.e. just a plain ‘regular’ search on a search engine) Image Search is the fastest growing vertical search in the space. Compared to shopping, news, blogging, etc., image search has them beat by a mile. However, what’s even more important about image search, is how Google’s Universal Search, Ask’s 3d Search and Yahoo’s Blended Search are utilizing and incorporating images from each of their image search verticals into the ‘regular’ search results. No longer are images appearing as just 3 images at the top of a results page, you’ll see images incorporated in a lot of different ways. You’ll see images coming up with the news one boxes, with descriptions of videos that aren’t on Google Video or YouTube, a group of images could appear at the bottom of a page, as opposed to the top of the page. All of the search engines are striving to make the results more relevant and incorporating images into the results is definitely part of that strategy. Just take a look at how Ask is incorporating images for a search on “Jodie Foster”. So with that in mind, here’s 5 tips and ideas to research to make sure you’re optimizing your sites images for the search engines. More blog posts to follow about each of these points.

- Image File Names
- Use the Alt Attribute of the IMG tag
- Use a Caption By Your Image
