Internet Marketing NYC, March Madness and Healthcare in the USA: What businesses can learn from basketball and domestic policies
Posted by Salem Global on Mar 23, 2010
I don’t know too much about Basketball and even less about College Basketball except for the fact that my nephew goes to the University of Maryland and I believe that the name of his team is the twerps or something like that. (As a matter of fact, I think he actually chose Maryland for its basketball team). But as a smart marketer (IMHO), I do know my audience and that more of my readers are more interested in basketball than they are Internet Marketing in New York. So let’s talk about “audience” and apply it to your organizations marketing strategy…
We have a new Spring intern here at SalemGlobal (Eli), and it just so happens that he is leading the Stage 2 Networks (where we sublet our office) tournament office pool for the NCAA College Basketball Championship. (If you want to know more about Stage 2, business phone systems and Joe Gillette, check out their website at www.Stage2Networks.com and Joe’s blog at www.JoeGillette.biz). So I asked Eli what’s going on and he said that we have had a couple of big upsets, a couple of big surprises and Kansas, who many thought were the overall favorite to win, was knocked out by a very tenacious Northern Iowa team (The Panthers). The Michigan State team (MSU) also outlasted Maryland to make it to the Sweet 16 and Purdue won a highly contested matchup in overtime to beat Texas A and M. In addition, Cornell outshot 61% from the field while scoring 87 points to defeat the Wisconsin Badgers who are known to have a very good defense. So, as a Cornell alum, he is very excited to see his alma mater shine and FINALLY, the Ivy league, usually known more for brains than brawn, finally gets onto the proverbial court. As a matter of fact, with the way that Cornell is playing, it wouldn’t surprise him if they went all the way. And of course, because Eli picked the long shot (Cornell) over the favored Kentucky, in addition to correctly choosing all first and second round picks, Eli is ahead of the game.
So I might not know too much about basketball, but I do know about my audience and my subject matter. No matter what I write about week after week, I can always tie it into Internet and website marketing. I am not just a creative guy, I love what I do. Writing is fun. Making the connection between current events, sports, games and anything else that comes my way might be a challenge but it stimulates me intellectually and professionally. And of course, it gets my audience reading and my brand is ingrained on their radar.
In addition to sports and basketball, the other topic on people’s minds this week (besides Tiger Woods) is the famed Democratic Party Healthcare bill. Interestingly enough and related, this week I saw the movie “Milk” with Sean Penn. Harvey Milk was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California. He fought tirelessly, until his assassination, for his and his communities rights. He succeeded in breaking down barriers and moved the US closer to freedom for all, fighting against hatred and bigotry.
Barack Obama is of course the first African-American President of the United States. It’s very possible that Harvey Milk’s short stint in politics during the 70′s broke down those very same barriers that lead us to elect Obama in the new millennium. Obama ran on a campaign that stated there would be “change” during his presidency and of course, healthcare was one of his major platforms. In other countries, healthcare is socialized. What that means is that the Government takes care of you whether you need a band-aid or cancer treatment. Doctors get paid from national insurance instead of out of your pocket. You can still seek private healthcare but you don’t have to worry about how to pay your medical bills.
While there are Medicare, Medicaid and welfare programs in America, healthcare is still largely out of pocket. Obama proposed a $940 billion plan that will start over the next five years, with provisions, taxes and fees gradually phased in, most starting in 2014. Many states and republicans are fighting this bill. The plan will expand health coverage in the US since the last Medicare in 1965, but it will come at a cost primarily to higher-wage earners, insurers, employers and the medical industry.
So whether you like it or not, I am here to write about who is taking advantage of the searches for “healthcare” and healthcare related keywords.
In my Google dropdown I see: “new healthcare bill” and then descriptor keywords are “summary,” “facts,” “explained,” “2010,” “details,” etc. etc. And who is advertising on the keywords: Smart entrepreneurs who are putting up marketing sites and running MORE advertising, Empire Health insurance, non-profits, and Ask.com
So this weeks lesson is to “know thine audience” for your own business as well as know how you can take advantage of current events to make a quick buck. If you want to know more about basketball, speak to my interns. If you want to know more about the healthcare bill, read it online. If you want to know more about making some money on the internet, driving more traffic to your website and marketing strategy, give me a call at 212-993-5828, email me at raphis@salemglobal.com or check out www.SalemGlobal.com for more information. And you should also consider coming to my Internet marketing seminar (www.TheSeminarSeries.com) (this Thursday!) where I teach this stuff to you in my conference room. It’s a no-brainer. And if you can’t make it, send your staff, your salespeople, or better yet, invite me into your organization.
Donated Food Becomes Cash for the Hungry: $1 Million Giveaway Helps Fight Hunger in America
Posted by Salem Global on Mar 22, 2010
Eva’s Kitchen (http://www.EvasVillage.org), the soup kitchen at Eva’s Village, makes an urgent March/April appeal for the Feinstein Foundation matching donation challenge
Paterson, NJ (PRWEB) March 16, 2010 — Eva’s Kitchen (NJ soup kitchen at Eva’s Village, makes an urgent March/April appeal for the Feinstein Foundation matching donation challenge.

Eva’s Village, a highly respected New Jersey anti-poverty organization, has announced their participation in the 2010 Feinstein Foundation13th Annual $1 million giveaway to fight hunger in America, created and funded by Alan Shawn Feinstein of Rhode Island.
Food and funds donated from March 1, 2010 through April 30, 2010 for Eva’s Kitchen may be matched up to $40,000 by Alan Feinstein. The purpose of the Feinsten Challenge is to encourage additional donations to participating anti-hunger charities, so food items, cash and checks donated during March and April through this challenge will help Eva’s in its mission to feed the hungry.
The need has grown so fast, and so dramatically, because of the economic crisis ![]() |
Sister Gloria Perez, Executive Director, points out that the Feinstein Challenge matching grant program makes March and April the perfect time for “grass-roots” efforts by any individual, family, church, organization or business to collect food and monetary donations for Eva’s Kitchen.
Food items will be valued at $1.00 per item or pound — items that will help to increase total donations fast and are needed most by the cooks at Eva’s Kitchen include sugar, tuna, rice, soups, olive oil and canned ravioli. To arrange a drop-off of collected food items, call 973-523-6220 x234 and ask for the “Feinstein Challenge”.
Monetary donations are encouraged online at EvasVillage.org or when mailing checks to Eva’s Village, 393 Main Street, Paterson, NJ 07501, reference “The Feinstein Challenge”.
In 2008, Eva’s Kitchen, the New Jersey soup kitchen at Eva’s Village, was seating 240 hungry people at noon for a hot meal. Today, just two years later, this bright, cheerful dining hall is far over capacity, doing double seatings and serving up to 350 people every day of the year.
Sister Gloria Perez, Executive Director of Eva’s Village says, “The need has grown so fast, and so dramatically, because of the economic crisis.” Sister Gloria notes that as the economy worsened, more and more of the “working poor” joined the homeless at Eva’s Kitchen. “We know that our kitchen must be expanded and we are discussing plans and funding opportunities to allow us to meet the growing demand for feeding the hungry”, she continued.
The Feinstein Challenge is a unique opportunity to gain the maximum benefit from volunteer efforts. Since 1981, hundreds of people have donated their time and hard work to feed the hungry at Eva’s Kitchen — some for more than twenty years. Others have devised their own creative and highly successful donation programs. Fred Puso and Jim O’Rourke, two members of the Knights of Columbus, St. Catherine of Bologna Council #6212 in Ringwood, have collected and donated 4 tons of coffee over the past 18 years (or 256,000 cups of brewed coffee).
Donors will be pleased to know that Eva’s Village holds a third consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator (CharityNavigator.org/). Ken Berger, President & Chief Executive Officer, Charity Navigator says, “Only 13% of the charities we rate have received at least 3 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Eva’s Village consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way, and outperforms most other charities in America. This “exceptional” designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Eva’s Village from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust.”
For more information on the programs at Eva’s Village, a comprehensive New Jersey anti-poverty charity, email Donna Fico, Chief Marketing Officer at Donna.Fico(at)evasvillage(dot)org or call (973) 523-6220 Ext. 230.

Internet Marketing, Hurricanes and Floods: What businesses can learn from crazy storms and weather pattern
Posted by Christopher.Skyi on Mar 16, 2010

When I write my content piece or blog of the week, I am either at home, on a train or in the office. Once in a while I will get to write in a noisy distracting Starbucks but most of the time I am at home. This weekend I witnessed one of the strangest storms ever in my lifetime. The non-hurricane crazy rain and wind that hit the New York Tri-state area this weekend is definitely one for the storybooks. As you can see from the attached photo, 100-foot tall trees fell as a result of the rain and wind. Sometimes on houses, sometimes across a street causing traffic to be re-routed and sometimes sadly and terribly tragically, on people. This morning the spokesperson or the CEO for Con Edison sort of confirmed my theory that all of the snow that we got this winter, together with the warm weather right afterward melting the snow, caused there to be an extraordinary amount of water in the ground, causing the soil underneath to be very moist and soft, allowed the decades old (if not centuries) trees to fall over. Some of you will say, “global warming!” Others will say something else (Not really sure but there should be an opposite to the ubiquitous “global warming” cry nowadays – shouldn’t there be?) So as I write this, some people are still without power. Their choices as I see it are to: A) get outta town, B) buy or rent a generator, C) Move in with friends, family or neighbors or D) return to the old world of pre-Edison no electricity “roughing it.” But whatever the answer, ultimately we have to act and change in order to survive.
When I think about “trees moving in force,” I think of the Lord Of The Rings. When I think about the trees and nature being the source of life, of course I think of “Mother Earth” or as was portrayed in the latest Oscar winning movie Avatar, “Aiwa.” I won’t spoil the movie for you so I will say SPOILER ALERT. DO NOT READ THE NEXT PARAGRAPH: The way I understood the movie was that us humans were destroying the earth so the earth reacted and showed its TRUE nature and strength. Even though we sow what we reap and you also get what you pay for. That of rebellion against chemicals and acid rain and pollution and whatever else we are doing to destroy what was given to us.
So when I think about huge 100-year-old trees falling on houses, wreaking havoc on traffic and neighborhoods, I personally don’t think about how terrible the weather is. I also don’t think about collateral damage, being inconvenienced or insurance. (Of course its easy for me to speak though since I didn’t have my car smashed, my house roof collapse nor did I or anyone I know get hurt.)
What I do think about are big corporations and companies that can afford to pay for top sponsorships in the search engines. These are the companies who have been around for decades. The 100-pound elephants. The mountains. The IBMs that were taken down by the Microsofts. The Microsofts that were taken down by the Googles. And then of course to the future… who will take down Google? Who will be like nature? Who will be like the melting snow? Who will be like the water that is able to seep into the earth and get into the small cracks, nooks and crannies where the larger entities are not able. Who are the small and nimble, flexible start-up companies that will have the young and youthful energy and spirit to take down the mighty. Who will adapt to the new Internet age, writing content, developing links and optimizing the social media?
The answer is simple. It is the visionaries who see the Internet as the final frontier for marketing. We have already been through print, radio and television. We are now living in the age of the online, digital and interactive. And if your company doesn’t adapt, it will fall the same way that the trees have fallen.
Of course I have more to say about evolution and the fact that way back when I learned in school about forests that turned into swamps, that turned into lakes, that nourished the surrounding soil, to create vegetation that sustained life in the surrounding area. What this all means is that life goes on. If your company is up to the challenge, it will sustain itself. You will hire an Internet consultant or marketing company (like mine) and we will guide you into the future. Because if you are not a visionary, you better hire someone that is. And maybe they come in the form of a consultant or a college grad. But however they arrive, always know that I and SalemGlobal are here to stay and help you if you need us. Want to know more about Internet marketing or just talk about Avatar and/or LOTR? Call me at 212-993-5828 or email me at raphis@salemglobal.com. I guarantee you an hour with me might bring you a decade into the future.
Getting Smart About Wisdom Teeth
Posted by Christopher.Skyi on Mar 10, 2010
If you were waiting for some extra brainpower to kick in with the arrival of your wisdom teeth, don’t hold your breath. Wisdom teeth are intelligent only in name, and are actually correlated with an advance in age, not an increase in smarts.
Most people develop three sets of permanent molars throughout youth and early adulthood. The molars appear in each of the four quadrants of the mouth (right, left, top, and bottom).
The first set grows in, or erupts, around age six, and the second around age twelve. The third and final set of molars generally appears during the late teens or early twenties. Because this age has traditionally been considered one of increased knowledge, third molars are fondly (if inaccurately) referred to as “wisdom teeth.”
While in many mouths, wisdom teeth arrive in perfect formation – aligned properly with respect to the jaw and the second molars – frequently they are instead impacted, which means they either do not fully come in, or they come in misaligned.
Impacted wisdom teeth can cause a number of problems, the most common being:
• Infection: When a wisdom tooth only partially erupts, it leaves an opening that bacteria can enter, leading to infection.
• Tooth damage: If a wisdom tooth erupts at an odd angle, it can cause damage to nearby teeth. Some wisdom teeth erupt at angles toward or away from second molars, or toward the inside or the outside of the mouth.
• Cyst formation: In some cases, a cyst, or fluid-filled sac, forms, and can cause pain as well as damage to the jawbone and tooth roots.
• Tooth decay and gum disease: Due to impaction, as well as location in the rear of the mouth, wisdom teeth can be difficult to brush and floss. Uncared-for teeth are more likely to decay, which can lead to gum disease.
Symptoms of impacted molars include pain, jaw stiffness, swelling of the face, swelling of the gums, and oral infection. If you experience any of these symptoms, give us a call immediately. We can assess the situation and recommend a specialist if necessary.
In many cases, an impacted wisdom tooth must be removed. And depending on the information gleaned from x-rays of your mouth, we may recommend that wisdom teeth be extracted before they even begin to erupt. An early removal can avoid painful problems and complicated extractions in the future. Extraction is a simpler procedure at an earlier age, because the tooth roots are smaller and the jawbone is less dense. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons estimates that about 85% of third molars will eventually need to be removed.
You may wonder why we develop third molars, if they are so commonly problematic. Anthropologists believe that the course of human evolution has involved a shrinking of the lower jaw, which leaves less room for these formerly useful teeth. As the last teeth to arrive, third molars are often faced with a game of musical chairs. In many cases there is no chair (space on the jaw) for these teeth to sit upon.
A complimentary theory finds that as the human diet has progressed from an abundance of meat, uncooked greens, nuts, and other foraged food to a “softer” diet, our third set of molars has been rendered unnecessary. A molar that has found a way to avoid working – now that sounds like one smart tooth!

Internet Marketing New York, The Oscars and Knowing Your Audience: What businesses can learn from the movies they watch
Posted by Salem Global on Mar 9, 2010
Last week I wrote about Malcolm Gladwell’s 10,000 hour rule. During one of my networking meetings I brought up this topic and my friend and associate Ron Rubin of DDR Enterprises corrected me on my interpretation of “Outliers.” He says that practice doesn’t just make “perfect,” practice actually makes “permanent!”
Interestingly related, over the weekend I saw the movie Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with my kids. If you are not familiar with it, it’s the story about a single father (I can relate), with 2 kids (I can relate), who is an inventor, (I can sort of relate as an Internet entrepreneur) and is constantly creating and inventing things that will make his life and the lives of those around him easier and more efficient. In his creative process he creates a sucking candy/ lollipop with holes in it. Instead of thinking they are useless, he discovers that these actually are whistles and calls them “toot sweets.” When he takes them to the big corporate “Scrumptious Confectionary and Candy Company,” he is shot down by the owner. Of course at the end of the movie (which always had a happy ending way back when in 1968) the big boss realizes that the candies might not be so great for humans, but they are perfect for dog whistles! Then big scary boss man writes out a check to Dick Van Dyke, and they all live happily ever after. Well, isn’t that special?! (Did I mention there was a car involved that flies and floats and saves them from the evil child-hating kingdom of Vularia! Oh and of course he also gets to marry the beautiful daughter of the Candy King but that’s beside the point also. I have more theories about this movie too but you will have to call or email me for that as I am trying to shorten my blog posts lately
The real point above is that I have been writing about consistency and endurance and never giving up for the past few months and I hope it is finally sinking in. Caractacus Potts never gave up. Not on his work nor his inventions. And in the long run, he persevered and succeeded. Sometimes we create things and work on things for hours and hours and with the sheer amount of time that is put into something, we can succeed either due to that amount of time and effort or something indirectly related.
Last week I also mentioned that content is one of the parts to Internet success and I would start coaching you on what to write, how to write and finding the time to write.
But before I start coaching you on WHAT to write, I want to share with you another tenet of Internet and website marketing. “Know Thine Audience!” As an example, at my networking meeting last Friday I gave a short presentation that is a 5-10 minute whet your appetite mini-presentation that touches upon the 21 things every business should know about websites and online marketing. One of the members of that group is a bereavement advisor. She helps you and your family cope with life changes that tragically come in as a surprise and challenging situations that aren’t a surprise at all. Dealing with deaths of parents, spouses etc. is not an easy task. So during my little lecture I was talking about how during the Olympics, a young male Olympian died during the luge competition (possibly due to the course being too fast but that’s another story). I had been writing about the Olympics for weeks but never touched upon this. When I mentioned to this consultant that a great article for her to write would be about the bereavement that this family had felt with the entire world watching, she agreed. So the message here is that you should be using current events to explain to your audience what you do and how you do it.
And that brings me to the Oscars. Best Picture: The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow), Actor in a Leading Role: Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Actress in a Leading Role: Sandra Bullock (The Blind Side), Directing: The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow). Ok ok. So I haven’t seen any of these movies. However, I did see “Up,” Best Animated Feature Film and Music, and “Avatar,” Best Cinematography and Art Direction. I don’t get out to the movies that much but I am a big fan of getting movies for free from the library. But I am in the minority. Millions of people all over the world live in the fantasy world of entertainment and movies allow us to transport to another universe for two hours at a time. Movies makes billions and billions of dollars worldwide because humans love to get away from their current lives, to dream and to stand in other peoples shoes if only for a short time. Movies are emotional. They speak to our inner senses. They make us feel happy, sad, scared and loved. They make us cry, laugh and leave us with a sense of wonder and move us to think and imagine. (By the way, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang won the Oscar for best music in 1968 and by the way I think South Park stole the music for this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xH6aj8ofBXk)
And how does one get to be at the top of the mountain in the movie industry? That’s right. Either you work your butt off for years and years and years, or attach yourself to others who have been working those 10,000 required hours. Of course the winners have talent and creativity. But it is the combination of teamwork and hard work and countless hours of perfecting and making permanent the skills required to move audiences that choose to spend their hard earned money to get away from it all for about 2 hours.
You can bring your business to the top of Google and to the top of your industry if you just invest the time necessary to make it happen. And here is a secret to making your business a success with Internet marketing… You can do it all for free. And in your spare time. And you can also hire interns to do it for you. That’s right. All of the tools necessary (see my 21 things businesses need to do to be a success online here: http://www.TheSeminarSeries.com, of course you can also sign up for my seminar where I teach it to you too) are all on the Internet right now.
So today start blogging, writing, hiring interns, create links, make videos and anything else you can do to move your company closer to success. You will be glad you did. Internet Marketing in NY, Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers and Olympic Hockey: What your business can learn from 10,000 hours of practice makes perfect
Posted by Salem Global on Mar 2, 2010
SalemGlobal has been in business for over 13 years. We started out very small in an Upper West Side two-Bedroom apartment, moved to a loft in the Garment District on 36th Street West of 8th Avenue and now have an amazing office on 40th Street across from Bryant Park with a view that only a few are privileged to have in a small crowded concrete jungle like New York City. We also have achieved something that I am very proud of and wasn’t even going after. True we have been in the number one position for “Website Marketing NY” and backwards “NY Website Marketing.” And also New York Website Marketing etc. etc. And let’s not forget “Internet Marketing NY and NYC.” But last week we reached the #2 position right behind Wikipedia for “Internet Marketing.” Here is the proof: http://websitestrategymarketing.com/salemglobal-number-2-for-internet-marketing (“Internet Marketing” is searched more often than “website marketing.”)
By the way, you will get the same results if you live in Brooklyn or on the Upper East Side. But what is frustrating is that in Westchester we are no where to be found… So the question is: why does Google show us different results in different locations? Why don’t they have the same results across the board; locally, across the country and all around the world? Is it because part of their algorithm is to show results based on traffic coming from your own IP address? Is it because they want us to see ourselves in a high position so that we can feel good about ourselves? Where do you see us for those keywords? Where do you stand for your own keywords?
Lately I have been writing about “consistency.” Keeping your name consistently in the Internet spotlight. Day after day, week after week, month after month. Each week and month, we create content for ourselves and our clients and then promote it out to the various new media. Corporate websites, press release distribution websites, article distribution websites, blogs, video sharing services, social media like Facebook and LinkedIn and much much more.
In his latest book “Outliers,” Malcolm Gladwell writes about how some of the most successful people in the world have devoted and invested at least 10,000 hours towards their desired profession or hobby. Some examples: Bill Joy, the programmer behind Sun Microsystems and UNIX. Bill Gates of Microsoft. The Beatles. You might not know this if you didn’t read the book but each of these people (and of course the band), put in thousands and thousands of hours into what they did before they became famous (and of course rich beyond anyone’s dreams). Bill Joy and Bill Gates had access to huge IBM mainframe computers in their schools, neighborhoods and universities in the late 60′s and early 70s before anyone knew what they were. The Beatles actually played in Hamburg Germany for hours and hours and more hours because the musical sets in that particular party scene called on bands to play for 8 hours a night. If you go to downtown NYC or any club in NY or LA, a new band is LUCKY to get a 15 minute set. The Beatles were on stage for so many hours, the needed to learn how to play every single genre of sound, cover every band and artist AND make up their own material in order to stay on stage. They weren’t getting paid a lot but they were absolutely perfecting their skills.
And what do I tell my kids every day (if and when) they have a complaint that “this is too hard” or “I can’t do this!” PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!! (Of course I have banned the word “can’t” from their vocabulary because I am a positive thinker and think that mostly anything is possible). Nothing is too hard and nothing is out of reach when you are disciplined and motivated. (Which is what I actually worked on in my military service as an organizational behaviorist and advisor. Though I had a BA in Psychology at the time, I still was working with soldiers that didn’t believe in themselves “enough.” And if the military can help change or modify behavior through motivation and/or discipline, a defense force will be that much more effective).
And that is why I believe the Canadians are the best Hockey players in the world. It’s not a matter of fact that they just won the Gold (after edging out the USA in overtime); it is most probably because they have more ice time than anyone else. From an early age, Canadians are on the ice, stay on the ice, continue on the ice and practice practice practice. It’s also colder up in Canada so they have more access to an ice rink. Which also is related to Joy and Gates having access to computers before anyone else. (Of course we can also debate this since according to Gladwell at some point their is a saturation point or “enough” ice time to make a team or a player great – but that is for another time)
So in conclusion for this week, your business can benefit from these lessons of hours and hours makes one perfect. Ok, maybe not “perfect” but certainly higher up on the search engines. We have been in business and writing and blogging and linking and building websites for over 13 years. Day after day, week after week, month after month. We haven’t given up. We do the same thing for our clients. If your business follows in our footsteps or let us create a path for you, you will most probably enjoy the same benefits we do.
Next week we will talk more about branding, identity and what to write for your business.
