First – Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mothers out there. I hope your online Mother’s Day was just as gratifying as your in-person Mother’s Day
There once was a movie about a terrorist. It must have been in the 80′s because that’s when all awesome cool simple people fought terror and won. (Think Bruce Willis vs. evil South African and German and whoever the bad guy of the day was. Drugs. Money Laundering. Gun Running. Schwarzenegger. Mel Gibson in Lethal Weapons 1 2 3 and 4 before he let the world know he was crazy. Anyway. In this movie, they switched the terrorists name around from Bin Laden to Abu Nidal. The problem with that switch was that it wasn’t really a switch. They thought they were so smart when they figured out the bad guy switched his name around and sent the cops around the block one extra time that gave him some more time to plan his getaway blah blah blah. My point is that I think there might be a connection between Bin Laden and Rafael Nadal’s awesome tennis shot winner between his legs. It’s unbelievable after you will see back and forth hard hitting volleying with no winner until he gets his opponent close to the net, then lobs it into a far corner. Check it out… Yes the bin laden story as well as the “tweener” video on Youtube…

Also in this week’s news, the weather has been crazy. Tornadoes. Tsunamis. Earthquakes. And now the Mississippi River has decided to go berserk! So the river is swelling and threatening Memphis TN. Folks, I think its time to reassess the real estate market close to water. Reminds me of a book I recently listed to titled “This Book Will Save Your Life.” It’s an interesting story about a guy who runs away from his wife and young son from New York to California. In the end, he floats away into the Pacific Ocean on his neighbor’s dining room table that was a movie prop made of Styrofoam. A lot of very creative things happen to this guy throughout the book. Definitely not the best book in the world but followed the formula to keep me interested for the few hours it took for me to listen to it in the car. I have been listening to Jonathan Kellerman a lot lately. Latest book is called Monster. Interesting and engaging but Kellerman goes on and on about the details of the furniture, clothing, weather and every imaginable detail that he turns a 200 page book into a 400 one easily. My latest book is Steig Larson’s Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.. Now THAT is one good book without fluff. No wonder its an international bestseller.
Ok – back to the water… This week we found a coach pulling one of his student team swimmers out of the water by the hair. True it didn’t look good. True its illegal. True he quit his job. True the team might have been protesting and got a disqualification, but I take the positive route. Maybe he was just practicing emergency life saving just in case the Miss River reaches Roseville, California anytime soon? Maybe? We have seen really terrible weather patterns lately. Anything is possible…

So what can your business learn from this week’s news? Well from Bin Laden and Rafael Nadal you have learned that names and keywords and spellings are really important to your online image and brand. As for the MI River and the coach from CA who went over the line, we learn that you can’t stop nature. If your video is going viral there is no way you can stop it. So you have to create the viral video for your organization and then hope that now assistant coach, manager or employee messes it up with negative press.
