There are many things in our lives and in our businesses that we can be proud of. Just starting up a business is something to be proud of. Most businesses fail within their first year. Then more fail within the next 2 – 5 years. But it takes something special that keeps a business going for so many years.

2012 will be my 15th year in business. I am proud of that accomplishment not only because it pays my bills and puts food on my table, but also because it says something about me and about my products and services. It says that I am a (hopefully you think) decent and honest salesperson and that I have a worthwhile product and service.

Internet marketing and the internet have not always had the best reputation. Of course the darlings of wall street thought that the Internet was revolutionizing the world and in the 90′s the banks were giving away money like it was air and water. But then the evil crash came down in 2001 and people started realizing that just because it says “internet” doesn’t mean that it’s going to help people socially or physically lead better or more meaningful lives. Nor did it mean that it would help make investors money. Sometimes it was just a good idea that wouldn’t help so many people. Maybe it would help one person… but that is not a business model. YOUR business deserves all the help and recognition it can get. So if you are in business, reward yourself with a poster about endurance. Check this out: Are you familiar with the famous Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton? He was the captain of a boat engulfed with ice. The whole crew of dozens of men almost died but they endured the coldest of winters and survived. The story gets even more fascinating when you break it down into their rescue and their 3 man team that navigated high seas, hiked over glaciers and survived the wild without food shelter or clothing suited for the climate or the challenge. Even today people challenge themselves with Shackleton’s endurance feats with better clothing to survive the elements as well as power bars and energy drinks. It’s almost a joke when you compare doing the things he did over 100 years ago to now. Read the book and see the documentaries. They will amaze you.

And lastly lastly, NBA basketball star Kris Humphries is no longer married to Kim Kardashian after 72 days… What is so funny about this situation is that they could’ve just dated for a lot less money. I read that their wedding cost something like Ten million dollars. Hopefully the ring artist, designer and manufacturer made money. And hopefully the caterer, the catering hall, the wedding planner, the photographer, the video guy, the bartenders and the florist all were found through website marketing and search engine optimization. It is no secret that more sales are made during 4th quarter than most other quarters. The way business works, in retail and in wholesale, is that most consumers will spend more during the holiday season than all year long. People are not only in the giving mood or mode, they are also in the receiving mode. Most businesses work according to a fiscal year that starts January 1 and ends December 31. That means that Christmas bonuses are on their way and it also means that more money gets spent on consumer items. But businesses (and non-profit organizations also), are also caught up in this frenzy and thats why all businesses and professionals should be ramping up their online efforts right now. Year after year I tell my readers, clients and potential clients that now is precisely the time to not just be going online, but also marketing online. For some industries it is again really too late for long term growth and they can only focus on short term. These strategies include pay per click advertising and interactive PR.

Since its the beginning of October, you have to logically think that people will start their holiday shopping this month. Halloween and the onset of the colder climate is a wake up call for people to at least start planning their Christmas shopping.. What do you think Timmy will want for Christmas this year honey? What would be an appropriate gift for my little princesses this year? Last year you got them a Wii, a cellphone and a new car. So do you purchase brand new this year or do you purchase the updated version? Certainly iPads and iPods and iPhones will be and should be well stocked. I predict Apple will have had a BOOM year. And with the iPad2 you will have millions of people lining up in the streets to get theirs. Certainly this falls under the category of “updated gift” vs. “new gift.”

From my perspective, (that of an online marketing professional), I can see that the economy has improved. I know people and companies are bringing in more money and I know they are seeking to spend it. Now is the time that businesses will also invest in their own companies. Certainly new computers, technology upgrades and services will be purchased. With all of the excess that people didn’t think about in these years budgets, I predict that some of that money will go towards employees bonuses.

Of course I am an optimist and think that the world is going to be a better place in 2012. Technology is one indicator, but takes a look at peoples vacation schedules as well. Travel will be up in 2012 but it will start in the 4th quarter. More people will be taking Christmas and new years holidays this year than the past few years. And then when Winter and Spring Break roll around, people will be flying to all sorts of destinations. I think Priceline.com and competing travel sites will make major bucks this and next year.

And then there is real estate. I agree with all of the real estate geniuses that tell you the best time to buy real estate is in a down economy. So home and apartment sales will be up soon enough. Sure we all think we are in a recession because people are out of work and money is tight. But after that cork is released we are going to see big things happen.

Another example of Q4 getting better for some companies is this announcement of Yahoo! and ABC News partnering to bring more content to more households than ever before. http://www.businessweek.com/ap/financialnews/D9Q50DFO2.htm This is a complete win-win situation for Yahoo! which has been losing market share to Google since day one as well as facebook with its social networking empire growing daily. As for ABC News, they were just lucky. Yahoo! could have gone with anyone. Why they went with ABC is beyond me. I assume its because they were offering the most money…

I haven’t talked about sports in a while so let me just say GO Yankees! I understand they are the all-time favorite with 27 World Series to their name. But it seems like the Detroit Tigers are also playing pretty hard since they are tied at 1-1 in the ALDS. Also in sports, Brett Favre has a new job providing color commentary for Ole-Miss (Did I get that right?) So what can your business learn from the above? Well, you might want to GET STARTED on your fourth quarter marketing already!!!!!! What the hell are you waiting for? Why haven’t you called me yet? The fact that nuclear reactors are melting and sending radiation into the earth and air mean problems for everyone near the reactor, in Japan, close to Japan and around the world. My understanding of the situation is that all of these workers were trying to save the reactor because its not only worth billions of dollars but also generates billions of dollars every year. It probably saves the country billions in energy costs as well. Not to mention how the military uses nuclear plants is beyond me. Regardless, these are the stories you will not hear on the evening news. Various bloggers and pundits will give their opinions but no one really knows what’s going on except the government and the people on the ground. Good luck to all of us seeing how this will all fallout. We know what happened in Chernobyl 25 years later and its not pretty. Of course you have to go down the mountain to go up the next one. We as a world will globally understand more about earthquakes, tsunamis and their relationship to our environment after this tragedy.

And then there is Libya. Who knows what’s going on there? All of a sudden Obama wakes up one day and decides that enough is enough. Come on people. Why do we pick and choose who to pick on, who to deal with and when do we turn our cheeks?

Thanks to social media and the Internet we have a better understanding of what is going on behind the scenes. Now that everyone has a cellphone with a camera built in we can get news instantly.

So I ask the question; Is no news good news or bad news? Clearly if civilians and reporters (who skew the news anyway) can’t get to a scene, there is something missing.

As for companies who are better than that, a number of people had asked me if I had seen the NY Times article on “The Dirty Little Secrets Of Search” (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/02/13/business/13search.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hp) When you are an individual and famous like Tiger Woods, Brittany Spears or Lindsay Lohan, your face and your name are your brand. Now seriously. Who is going to want to buy a Lindsay Lohan necklace after her latest fiasco in California? One of the most famous books out there is by Mark McCormack, “What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School.” As head of one of the largest sports and celebrity representation companies, he was all about what you do today to make money and glorify your brand so that in the future you can ride those coattails. (See Jerry Maguire – SHOW ME THE MONEY!) Do good on the field and then you can do well after the game is over. Give to charity today and watch them honor you later on in life.

JC Penney is one such company. A good company that makes VERY good money. According to the NY Times article, they made $17.8 Billion dollars in 2010. Not bad! They also spent $2.46 million in paid search ads. Definitely worth it. But they also used a digital marketing and SEO firm to broker some bad black hat practices for them. As a result, they were at the top for many Google searches when they shouldn’t have been. Apparently Google didn’t catch it and only busted them after they probably raked in millions as a result of being at the top of the organic listings. So this stinks for JC Penney, but it also stinks for Google, the world of search and all of the small guys who should have been at the top for various keywords when they were not.

The good news that I glean from all of this is that I am right! I said that Google was going to downplay links coming from 3rd party outside sources and websites and that content was going to reign supreme. They had paid for thousands of non-relevant links and it paid off in the short term. But now they are being punished so that’s too bad. I am guessing a few possibilities.

1) JC Penney might not have known what their search engine firm was doing for them.

2) Some people might not have known. Others who didn’t know didn’t care or weren’t paying attention. After all, online doesn’t compare to offline for them so it probably slipped under the radar.

3) JC Penney did know but didn’t care.

4) JCPenney knew and so did Google. But because they spend so much they were willing to overlook it.

This can be a nasty business sometimes considering click fraud and the amount of money Google and other search engines charge. But supply and demand drives the market.

In conclusion, I believe in testing, reporting and monitoring. Not everything is going to work at first. But if you can find an honest way to market yourself, you are going to benefit in the long run.

So what does the man of the house do when his team is on a bye? (A bye is when a sports team, specifically your hometown NFL football team is on break and does not play anyone else that weekend) Well obviously he turns to the Internet instead of the TV. According to one website (we will not be sharing the links here on this blog but you can always Google the story yourself), it turns out that porn traffic increases each weekend that there are no sports being played. How is that relevant to your business during 4th quarter?

Well, there are 33 Days till Christmas. 38 Days to the New Year. Thanksgiving. Black Friday. Cyber Monday. And guess what? Hanukkah starts next week as well. If you are in the business to consumer (B2C) world, you better think of some strategies quickly, otherwise you will be out-marketed. If you are in the business to business world (B2B) then you should be planting your seeds today. It amazes me that people who have been in business for years don’t recognize 4th quarter for what it really is… a wake up call. Either to be selling product to the public now, or setting your company up for the next year. But I guess that is the difference between organizations that recognize good marketing vs. others who just pray for good luck.

Speaking of luck and betting, though I won $14.00 in Atlantic City last week, I then lost $16.00 in another game but then recovered with a win of $95.00 in my last game. So overall, many hours of fun, as well as profitable. Unfortunately, billionaire Sir Richard Branson lost his bet to Tony Fernandes, the owner of Air Asia. They had wagered services in the form of cross dressing and acting as Flight Attendant over whose Formula One racing team would do better this season. So if you fancy Sir Richard serving you tea in high heels, seats are being auctioned off for charity as I write this.

Latest book of the week is Lance Armstrong’s “It’s Not About the Bike: My Journey Back to Life.” It’s one of the most amazing true life stories that will inspire you to take a look at your life, what you have, what you would do if you had cancer, on your deathbed and then rally back to win one of the greatest tests of human strength and endurance that exists. He talks about his parent’s divorce, his father, mother, relationships, being a cocky young kid, cycling when no one in America took it seriously, getting cancer, winning it all, losing it all, winning it back, marriage and fatherhood. Of course this book was written in 2001 when good old Lance was still married before his own divorce and relationships with Hollywood celebs, movie stars, musicians and more.

But my point in bringing this up this week is that I know a lot of businesses have been struggling over the past few years. This has been one of the worst recessions ever. Whether you blame it on the government or the people or Bernie Madoff, fact is that fewer people are spending on frivolous items and sticking to the essentials. So in B2C, essentials are related to food shelter and clothing. During the rest of the year, people wait to spend their hard earned dollars on TV’s, cars and Jewelry. But now that its holiday time, people are opening their wallets and getting on line and online to see what kind of bargains they can grab. If you are a retailer you better have sales galore and the cheapest price in town. You better have coupons and ways for your customers to save a penny. Everyone will be doing research online and on line. They better be able to find you on the Internet, eBay and Amazon and then walk into your store and get it for the same price or cheaper.

As for the B2B sector, now is the time to send out the message that when they are looking for that new service contract, your price will not be beat. Whether you are in commercial or office cleaning services, medical billing or website marketing, let your customers know that lead generation is your priority. Let them know that January 1st will be the dawning of the Age of Aquarius and that 2011 will be the best recovery year ever! Just like Lance Armstrong’s comeback, so too will the economy come back and your business as well. But you can’t stay down. You need to get back on the bike and work harder than anyone else.

Cancer transformed Lance Armstrong’s body and mind. He lost 20lbs. off his frame which helped him to become a lighter mass on the bike riding up the hills. And this terrible economy has also transformed many businesses. Many new business models have come out of it. People cut costs, people and have become much leaner business machines. Now we need to work on strength and endurance. You still need a good business plan and execution strategy.

Eva’s Village, the well-known Paterson, NJ anti-poverty nonprofit, describes a “perfect storm” of declining donations during a time of increasing need among the hungry, homeless and poor.

In a survey conducted in March 2009, The Council on Foundations reported that 62 percent of the 430 foundations surveyed, expect to reduce their grant making this year. Eva’s Village has received notification from numerous foundations that they are not distributing funds at this time because they are redirecting interests elsewhere or because funds have been allocated for the year.

Coincidentally, The Center for Non-Profits conducted an online survey of New Jersey Non-Profits in February 2010. Similar to the previous year, they reported that 64% of the responding organizations saw an increase in the demand for their services in 2009 and expect the trend to continue in 2010. Eva’s Village alone experienced a 20% increase in the hungry and homeless coming to Eva’s Kitchen for a hot lunch over the past two years (since 2007). Eva’s Village also reports an increase in the poor and homeless seeking free medical and dental care at the Eva’s Village Primary Care Clinic.

Despite detecting a decline in giving, Eva’s Village is building 50 units of affordable housing, and expanding Eva’s Kitchen and Eva’s Primary Care Clinic to meet the increasing demand.

Sister Gloria Perez, Executive Director of Eva’s Village, notes that the Eva’s Village mission of feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, treating the addicted and providing medical care for the poor has never been driven by donations, but by need. Donna Marie Fico, Chief Marketing Officer at Eva’s Village remains hopeful. She reports that during the current economic downturn, Eva’s Village has been increasingly proactive in employing new fundraising strategies.

Noting that many corporations and foundations were decreasing the funds distributed to charity, Eva’s Village created the “Bond, Boost, and Build” program. This highly successful team building effort for the employees of New Jersey corporations offers tours of Eva’s Village and volunteering in Eva’s Kitchen, a NJ soup kitchen serving a nutritious lunch to more than 350 homeless and working poor individuals daily.

More new efforts at Eva’s Village aim to reach donors and volunteers able to participate at a modest level. A 5K fun walk/run was created last year and deemed a success. Titled the “Journey of Hope”, the second annual walk/run will be held on September 25, 2010 at Garret Mountain Reservation, Woodland Park (West Paterson), NJ. Ms. Fico notes that the event drew participants from a new donor demographic, increased the participation of smaller businesses, and enlisted the help of the youth in the area.

Eva’s Village has also enlisted the help of a Volunteer Coordinator, and is adding another fundraising event titled “Behind the Seams”. This fashion show, featuring the Robert Graham Collection was suggested by two Eva’s Village supporters who are cosponsoring the event; Sal Lauretta for Men, Midland Park, andBottagra Restaurant, Hawthorne. As a doctor you are either seeing patients or treating patients. You are consulting with them. You are meeting with them, evaluating their aches and pains and hopefully just seeing them for “well” visits. I know from my own experience with doctors over the past years when I have been relatively “well,” that I get asked the usual questions regarding breathing, exercise, activity, stress etc. etc. Then they look in the ear, nose and throat, take my blood pressure and I am on my way.

What I described above is NOT what you should be writing about. I guarantee you the worst and most boring blog if you stick to the above formula. What you need to do is talk about the special cases. Describe the person – obviously with professional courtesy and confidentiality in mind. Tell your audience whether they are male or female, age and issue. Obviously, whatever your specialty – orthodontist, dentist, plastic surgeon, podiatrist, dermatologist, eye doctor, lasik etc… you will want to customize your blog to whatever is the ailment or situation of the day. How crooked this guys teeth are or how bad this woman’s eyesight is. Then you should share with the audience what evaluation you are giving, solution and procedure. Blog about preparation (Lasik candidates have to put eye drops in their eyes and drinks lots of fluids). And then what recovery will be like and what to expect.

I will never forget when my brother in law (who is a dentist in Larchmont, NY -www.21stCenturyDentist.com Dr. Joel Levy) told me about a patient who is a good guy, came in after eating a burger with EXTRA ONIONS! He laughed about it, I remembered and that could’ve been a great blog piece.
