Labor Day Weekend, Summer Over, 9/11: What your business can learn from summer fun and tragedy
Posted by Salem Global on Sep 6, 2011
So Labor Day weekend is over. Camp is over. Summer is over. And so fitting for it to be raining today. While standing with my kids waiting for the bus this morning I was thinking how I could spin it into it being such a great day to go back to school. I think I said something like “aren’t you glad it didn’t rain this summer so that you were able to play outside and enjoy the whole summer etc. etc.” Of course, now that I am really thinking about it, they weren’t so affected by the hurricanes, tornadoes and earthquakes. I lost electricity but wasn’t home and didn’t have too much in my fridge so nothing spoiled. Then again, my neighbor still needs to get me my lantern back. Hey Neighbor! I did lose some cardboard boxes that were in my flooded basement. But I am ok with that… considering the fact that other friends, acquaintances and people lost much more…
And then 9/11 is coming up this Sunday. I was lucky and only lost one friend/ acquaintance in that tragedy. (Rest in peace Nancy Morgenstern – donate to this site in her memory: http://nancymorgensternmemorial.org/) No words can really express the gut-wrenching feeling we all have when tragedy strikes. No words. No comparisons. But I will quote you what is written on the home page of that website. “Your daughter was deeply admired and loved by her friends and we will miss her greatly. Perhaps the greatest contribution someone can make to their friends, family and colleagues is to inspire others to be great. Nancy was such and inspiration.”
I ran the NYC Marathon in 2001 and we all felt the same way as we passed through the 5 boroughs of NYC. Thinking about terrorism, the world, New York and how the twin towers used to be right… over… there….
So what can we as business people learn from 9/11 and the fact that it has been 10 years? To lead an ethical, moral, upstanding, outstanding, inspirational life. We owe it to ourselves, our families, friends and colleagues. The people with whom we do business deserve the best that we can be and the best that we can offer. Here is to a great new year and lifetime of good business, a better economy and good times for all.
And just to change it around a bit, enjoy some songs I am listening to this week:
Adele – Rolling In the Deep – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYEDA3JcQqw&feature=related
White Stripes – Icky Thump – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OjTspCqvk8&ob=av2e
The Raconteurs – Salute Your Solution – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lL1CW140FQ&ob=av2e
As for what mobile plan I switched to from Verizon? T-Mobile now has my $30/month (down from $85). So far so good. And I bought my new blackberry phone at the least expensive place in NYC (you can get it cheaper over the Internet though) if you want a cellphone, these guys have the best prices in NYC: http://www.mobilecityonline.com/wireless/store/nycstore.asp
