Tornadoes, Memorial Day, Ex-President Bush’s Balls and Tigers Millions: What your business can learn from online videos, social media, twitter and weekend sales

Posted by Salem Global on May 25, 2011

Lots going on in the world this week. But the weather rules over all. In New York we have been complaining about the fact that it has been raining, cloudy or overcast (ruining my weekly softball games) but of course today it is bright and sunny. My next game is tomorrow so of course don’t forget your umbrellas. Either the rain is directly linked to my softball game schedule or to the arrival of my interns from France this summer? Thoughts? Do you have interns from France? Did you hear them say anything about the “rain dance” on America?

In all seriousness though, before we begin today, our hearts go out to the victims of Mother Nature’s latest natural disaster. Here is a page and video from KSDK and the Red Cross how you can help: http://www.ksdk.com/news/article/260091/3/Joplin-tornado-donations

In much lighter news, Tiger Woods recently donated one million dollars to his own foundation as a result of a media prank (sort of). He injured his leg somehow and before a press conference (I think having to do with the fact that he makes more than any other athlete in the world right now but hasn’t been playing so well) he stated that if no journalist asks him about his leg, he will donate $1mm to charity. But of course as “real” journalism goes, the first question was indeed about his injury. http://twitter.com/#!/TigerWoods

Speaking of balls, you have got to see this:

http://www.myfoxorlando.com/dpp/hot_video/052411-video-foul-ball-lands-near-president-bush

Former President George W. Bush at the White Sox vs. Texas Rangers game almost gets hit by a foul ball. I like what the announcer said – catcher probably said “just trying to protect you Mr. President.” What I want to know is why the secret service didn’t catch it?

Finally, this weekend is Memorial day weekend. First let us wish the best to those of you who have lost loved ones fighting for or protecting the United States of America (and its allies.) Now -  Time for car sales! (see http://www.garyromehyundai.com/ and get a great deal on a new Hyundai!) Besides promoting my own clients though :) Check out all of the sales going on in brick and mortar establishments as well as online. One of the first things I always advise companies and organizations on is the calendar. It can become a sales frenzy. Use what is going on in the world to your advantage. Have a Memorial Day sale and promote it everywhere….on the internet and off.

Well that’s it for today. Want to know more about how to get more donations for your non-profit organization? How to use twitter? Online video? Promote a sale? Call Raphi Salem at 212-222-3292 or email him at info@salemglobal.com .

Japan’s Nuclear Issues, Obama, US Launches Military Action Against Libya, Is No News Bad News? SES: What your business can learn from silence and social media

Posted by Salem Global on Mar 22, 2011

Our sympathies continue to go out to close to 10,000 dead as a result of last week’s tsunami off the coast of Japan. I also heard that another 12,000 are missing. That doesn’t sound good.

The fact that nuclear reactors are melting and sending radiation into the earth and air mean problems for everyone near the reactor, in Japan, close to Japan and around the world. My understanding of the situation is that all of these workers were trying to save the reactor because its not only worth billions of dollars but also generates billions of dollars every year. It probably saves the country billions in energy costs as well. Not to mention how the military uses nuclear plants is beyond me. Regardless, these are the stories you will not hear on the evening news. Various bloggers and pundits will give their opinions but no one really knows what’s going on except the government and the people on the ground. Good luck to all of us seeing how this will all fallout. We know what happened in Chernobyl 25 years later and its not pretty. Of course you have to go down the mountain to go up the next one. We as a world will globally understand more about earthquakes, tsunamis and their relationship to our environment after this tragedy.

And then there is Libya. Who knows what’s going on there? All of a sudden Obama wakes up one day and decides that enough is enough. Come on people. Why do we pick and choose who to pick on, who to deal with and when do we turn our cheeks?

Thanks to social media and the Internet we have a better understanding of what is going on behind the scenes. Now that everyone has a cellphone with a camera built in we can get news instantly.

So I ask the question; Is no news good news or bad news? Clearly if civilians and reporters (who skew the news anyway) can’t get to a scene, there is something missing.

SES – search engine strategies is the trade show for my industry. Internet marketing at its finest. Software, hardware, marketing companies. You name it, we are all in New York, NY this week at the Hilton Hotel at 1335 Avenue of the Americas. Wanna meet? Just email me and lets get together. Want to know more about me, my company, internet strategies, social media and lead generation? Give us a call at 212-222-3292.

Search Engine Strategies NY Danny Sullivan

Posted by Salem Global on Mar 1, 2006

As I was leaving the conference today I bumped into Danny Sullivan. It seems about 50-75% of all ses ny conference attendees have palm treos with camera phone. So naturally I asked someone to take our picture. Funny thing is that the first guy we asked did NOT know how to use the camera feature. (Seriously. They let him in…I guess if you pay enough to get into the conference, they let you in. Regardless, the 2nd guy was able to take the pic.) More tomorrow…with pics too

Search Engine Strategies, NY Events and Parties Networking

Posted by Salem Global on Feb 27, 2006

Though I would love to attend all of these, unfortunately I will be working. On the other hand, networking IS working! Ok – myabe I will attend. OTOH, I/you have to get your priorites straight. When networking, you really have to weigh out what you are doing there.

Are you trying to get more business?
Are you trying to get a new job?
Do you think alcohol is going to add to the possibility opf working for google or any other presenting company?
Are the people that attend these events the types of people/ people in the position to give you an account/ and /or hire you?
There are lots of related questions you need to ask before you attend these. Overall I am a big networker. If I am there for fun, yes I drink. If I am there professionally, I usually will just drink water. Sometimes alcohol does some things to you that you regret later. Missed opportunities. Bad first impressions. Regardless, everything in moderation. You don’t want to ruin your career or business by saying the wrong thing to the wrong person at the wrong time.

So yes. You should attend as many as above as possible. Just remember everything in moderation. There are 2 types of networkers. Those who latch on to 1 or a few people and have in depth conversations, get to know the other person and end up with a strong solid base of a relationship for future purposes of ??? And then there are people who are “card collectors.” Going from person to person collecting business cards like they were collecting baseball cards. I don’t recommend the latter.

But if you want to meet me, give me call on my business phone 646-217-4733 and we can meet and talk. There are 2 types of people I want to meet with. a) Potential clients. b) Power partners. (a) is obvious. (b) sometimes is forgotten about. You have to really think about who a power partner is. Someone who you can benefit from. Of course, the ideal PP is someone who receives as well as gives. Meaning, a mutually beneficial relationship wheras you are giving each other business.

Ok. Enough about networking. Here are the updated events from:
http://forums.searchenginewatch.com/showthread.php?t=9912
